Gunther,

I won't be able to attend the HL7 meeting as I am transitioning between
jobs. I would expect that Tom may present the ObservationValue data
types on Wednesday but in depth discussions would be Thursday. A lot of
the reason we wanted the Thursday meeting was to discuss these with you
and see what you have been working on. I hope the COAS submitters can
attend the Wednesday AM meeting so they will understand your work and
that you can attend Tom's presentation to the Templates group (Wed pm I
think) so you can see what he has been working on. That way each group
would be informed of the other's work and Thursday's discussions would
likely be more productive.

One thing I hope is explained by the COAS team is the difference between
the Information Model (Tom is the expert on this) and the Service
Component Model. These address two different views within the Reference
Model for Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP). The COAS Information
Model is the "Information View" of RM-ODP and the Service Component
Model is the "Computational View" (I believe) of RM-ODP. When the data
types get mapped down to the Service Component Model (IDL) there will be
some transformation since concerns about distribution, efficiency, etc.
show up there. For example in the Information Model the Blob has many
subtypes (with 0 or 1 new attribute). In the Service Component Model
there will only be one Blob type where the MIME header information
("Content Type")indicates the actual data type being passed. Many of
the optional attributes also don't show up explicitly in the IDL but can
be provided as ObservationQualifiers.

Last week at the COAS meeting there were some changes to the
ObservationValue types, including some of the things you mentioned in
your review. I think Tom has already made the changes in the
Information Model and will present the latest. At the end of last week
(literally Friday night) Chuck Carmen and I came up with a mapping of
the ObservationValue data types into the Service Component Model but I
doubt they will be documented before the HL7 meeting and Chuck will not
be there either. Hopefully this is not a problem if the discussions can
be around the ObservationValue types in the Information Model.

Have a good meeting!
