It seems to me there is still a problem with what is proposed here since
DICOM is really to do with raw image data communication not presented image
comunication. This is being addressed now by supplement 33 (Sfycopy
Presentation State) which is concerned with the rendereing of greyscsle
pixel data in a standard way.  This supplement does not deal with colour
images nor does it say anything about the number of pixels to be used to
display an image.  Also there is lots of DICOM raw image data out there. 
One cannot rely on the Softcopy Presentation State facilities having been
used.

We shall shortly be looking at all this in CEN/TC251/WG IV PT34.
