Healthcare in the news

"Clearly, consumers are being heard. Startups already are stepping into
the void left by hospitals and doctors who shun the Web. Dr. Koop and
Seattle-based startup Lexant, for example, plan to offer personal
health-care records that let consumers fill in their medical histories
and, when possible, link electronically with labs or doctors' offices to
add data about recent tests or visits. Consumers use a personal
identification number or password to visit the site."

"As part of the CPR project, the hospital is switching from the
mainframe-based Clinipac to IDX's LastWord for inpatients and
MedicalLogic's Logician for outpatients. The change was intended to help
move data off paper charts and improve information availability to
caregivers, but the idea of linking doctors and nurses to these digital
records via bedside terminals presented many problems. In-room terminals
are cumbersome and difficult to maintain, as well as insecure and too
close to the public. Yet the comprehensive LastWord application required
terminal access."

"Now the hospital's doctors and nurses are equipped with 470 Symbol 4340
HandHeld terminals and about 150 cart-mounted HP OmniBook laptops with
radio-frequency (RF) cards, complemented by a host of Winterm terminals at
key nursing units and department locations. The devices are supported by a
Spectrum24 RF network. In order to provide adequate roaming coverage, the
IT team installed 320 access points and antennas in hospital ceilings."
